Atrium Health Puts Patients First with OnCore, EMR Integration

Atrium Health, a large health system serving North and South Carolina with over 900 locations and 11 million annual patient encounters, needed to ensure clinical trial subjects are reliably identified across its network so emergency and treating personnel could deliver safe, protocol‑aware care. Working with vendor Advarra and its OnCore clinical trial management system, Atrium Health sought seamless interoperability with its Cerner EMR so trial status would be visible in emergencies and research teams would be notified of ED interventions.

Advarra collaborated with Atrium Health and Cerner to implement OnCore integration in two phases—first synchronizing protocol data to Cerner and then deploying OnCore’s RPE interface (built to IHE standards) to automate subject status feeds. The solution from Advarra now flags subjects in the Cerner banner, triggers interactive pop‑ups for prescribers, and delivers daily digests to research staff, eliminating manual EMR entry, improving AE/SAE reporting, and streamlining workflows; in one recent case the integration immediately alerted ED staff to a trial subject in an auto accident, preventing drug interactions and protocol deviations.
