VDSL X-Ring solution that leverages Ethernet switch functionalities over a variety of cables

Transportation Environment and Energy Company faced the challenge of extending Ethernet switch functionality and management to remote transportation and energy sites without costly new wiring or blanket fiber deployment. Advantech addressed this by supplying VDSL SFP modules that plug into Advantech Ethernet switches and an X‑Ring topology (including X‑Ring Pro) to carry power and data over mixed media (twisted pair, coax, and fiber), enabling deployment across short, medium, and long distances.

Advantech implemented a mixed VDSL/fiber/copper X‑Ring solution using its VDSL SFPs and EKI series switches, which extended reach (copper <100 m, VDSL 100–1,000 m, fiber 1,000+ m), added management and security features (SNMP, 802.1x, RADIUS) and delivered fast redundancy (X‑Ring Pro recovery <20 ms). The result was broader, more flexible coverage for transportation surveillance and highway emergency devices, reduced need for new cabling/fiber runs, and improved remote monitoring and resilience thanks to Advantech’s solution.
