Taiwan Bio Lab - Customer Case Study

Taiwan Bio Lab, running compute- and data‑intensive genome simulations, found its Advantech SOM-5991 workstation limited to about 30% capacity because storage throughput was the primary bottleneck. The customer had originally used a 4‑port SATA SSD RAID on the SOM‑5991 and sought a higher‑speed storage solution to fully utilize the workstation’s compute resources.

Advantech addressed the problem by using the SOM-5991’s PCIe Gen3 lanes to host four SQFlash 910C PCIe NVMe SSDs (NVMe 1.1), each delivering over 2.5 GB/s sequential read and ~350,000 4K read IOPS — roughly 4.5× the performance of SATA SSDs. The upgrade raised overall workstation efficiency by at least 3×, improved multi‑tasking and simulation throughput, and added data protection via the SQFlash‑bundled McAfee anti‑virus and SQFlash Utility for enhanced security and reliability.
