Implementation of Advantech’s Cellular Router Solution for the Real-Time Monitoring of Sydney Ferries

Sydney Ferries, which handles about 14.7 million trips annually in Sydney, engaged Advantech to solve the challenge of providing centralized, real‑time visibility and remote control across a moving ferry fleet and multiple wharfs. The project required onboard wireless data acquisition, PoE for cameras, GPS NMEA reporting, 3G/4G connectivity, and monitoring software—delivered via Advantech’s cellular routers (SmartFlex SR309 series) and R‑SeeNet monitoring services.

Advantech installed cellular routers on each ferry, hard‑connected them to PoE cameras and display systems, and used 3G/4G and GPS to stream location and operational data to a central control room and to kiosks at each wharf. The Advantech solution enabled real‑time localization, centralized remote monitoring and management, and live passenger information dashboards at wharfs, improving information transparency, system reliability, and rider comfort across the Sydney Ferries network.
