COM Express® Sparks Design Flexibility and Scalability for Inflight Entertainment Solutions

Leading Inflight Entertainment Solutions Provider, a Tier 1 IFE supplier of DSU head‑end systems and VDU seat‑back displays, needed higher server bandwidth for richer onboard entertainment while keeping system cost, power consumption and weight down and ensuring a longer product life cycle. To meet these challenges they worked with Advantech and evaluated the SOM-5992 COM Express Basic Type 7 module as the core of a scalable, low‑power solution.

Advantech delivered a tailored implementation—providing an evaluation board quickly, removing several Broadcom switches to cut cost, power and footprint, and ensuring an ARINC 600‑compliant server footprint—while leveraging the SOM-5992’s 2×10 GigE lanes. The changes yielded an estimated $360,000 annual cost savings, reduced weight and power draw, and future‑proofed bandwidth and media capability (up to 8K support), leaving the customer very satisfied with Advantech’s solution.
