A Advantech Case Study
Leading Oil and Gas Company, operating thousands of pumpjacks in Xinjiang, needed a secure, higher‑bandwidth way to upload growing volumes of field data (including live video) because legacy GPRS DTU modems lacked the packet size and throughput required and wired options were costly. After increased cybersecurity concerns following the 2017 WannaCry attack, they engaged Advantech to provide a cellular WAN solution using the BB-SL306 4G Cellular Router and EKI-2525I Industrial Ethernet Switch.
Advantech installed BB-SL306 routers with EKI-2525I switches at pumpjack cabinets, using carrier SIMs, static IPs, multiple VPNs and software firewalls to secure 3G/4G transfers. The deployment enabled automatic interval data uploads, live video monitoring from the central platform, and direct remote access and troubleshooting of multiple wells simultaneously — improving inspection efficiency, reducing the need for expensive fiber/bridge builds, and delivering higher performance and security compared with the previous DTU setup.
