NHS Scotland sees performance improve by up to 500 times with new real-time reporting solution

NHS Scotland, which provides a shared national finance service across all 22 NHS boards in Scotland, was struggling with slow reporting and operational strain on its live eFinancials finance system from Advanced. With around 55,000 reports run each month, BI queries were causing peak-time performance issues, long report waits, and difficulties transacting against the Oracle database.

Advanced implemented a separate real-time reporting solution using IBM Pure Data for Analytics (formerly Netezza) alongside eFinancials, with ETL updates within minutes and minimal changes to existing BI reports. The result was major performance gains of 10 to 50 times on average, and up to 500 times faster in some cases, while freeing the operational system for normal processing and enabling more analysis and value-added work.
