BHP achieves 0.070% underground navigation error with Advanced Navigation

Advanced Navigation helped BHP overcome the significant challenge of achieving reliable vehicle navigation in a deep, underground mine where GNSS signals are entirely absent. Legacy systems suffered from compounding positional drift, and alternative methods required extensive, costly fixed infrastructure that is difficult to maintain in the harsh mining environment.

The solution implemented by Advanced Navigation was a vehicle-based hybrid navigation system integrating their Boreas D90 inertial navigation system and Chimera Land laser velocity sensor. This sensor fusion approach delivered remarkable dead-reckoning accuracy, achieving a 0.070% error over 22.92km at 1400 meters depth. This high-precision, infrastructure-free solution is a critical step forward for enabling efficient fleet management and autonomous operations in GNSS-denied environments.
