Case Study: XXII Winter Olympic Games achieves seamless citywide Wi-Fi coverage with Adtran vWLAN

A Adtran Case Study

Preview of the XXII Winter Olympic Games Case Study

ADTRAN virtual Wireless LAN (vWLAN) Provides Wi-Fi Coverage Across the Sochi Winter Olympics

The XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi needed to provide extensive, reliable, and affordable Wi-Fi coverage for over a million visitors, athletes, and media. With no existing infrastructure and a growing reliance on digital and social media, the challenge was to deploy a massive wireless network across new hotels, venues, and public areas that could support high-bandwidth applications like live streaming and VoIP.

Adtran's Bluesocket vWLAN solution was deployed to virtualize network management, eliminating hardware controllers and reducing costs. This allowed partner NSTel to install a scalable network with specially designed access points across the Olympic landscape. The Adtran solution provided seamless connectivity, enabling over 500,000 visitors to watch events at live sites and supporting over 6,000 simultaneous users with reliable performance for internet access and video chatting.
