Aloha Cabled Observatory - Customer Case Study

Aloha Cabled Observatory (ACO), a University of Hawaii SOEST project that repurposes an undersea telecom cable to power and communicate with hydrophones, cameras and environmental sensors, needed a low-cost, easy-to-deploy monitoring solution. With 55 undersea and 50 shore devices, limited storage, expensive service calls and a desire to minimize custom software, the team sought reliable fault detection and web access without the cost and training overhead of traditional enterprise tools.

They chose AdRem NetCrunch, which provided simple setup, SNMP/WMI/ICMP monitoring and web portal access so even an oceanographer could configure it. NetCrunch delivered early detection of network interruptions (often before in‑house scripts), automated traffic and disk-usage reports, and grouping by ports and power boundaries — enabling faster troubleshooting (including identifying a flooded serial module), improved data flow and lower operational costs.
