A Adobe Case Study
Ushahidi is a Kenyan-born nonprofit that built open-source software to crowdsource real-time reports of crises after the disputed 2007 election, and its platform has since been used in 160+ countries for 150,000+ deployments and roughly 30 million citizen reports. As communication expectations shifted toward instant, mobile-first experiences, the organization faced the challenge of making its tools intuitive and reliable for people and teams trying to stay safe and coordinate during fast-moving emergencies—a need highlighted after the 2013 Westgate mall attack when people struggled to check on loved ones.
To meet that need Ushahidi worked with Designit and Adobe to design and prototype TenFour, a centralized check-in service that sends and receives simple status messages across multiple contact points. Using Adobe XD (free and browser-shareable) enabled global, open collaboration and rapid prototyping during design jams, producing an easy-to-use mobile solution that improves situational awareness and reduces anxiety in crises while strengthening Ushahidi’s global, human-centered response capabilities.
