Training American Red Cross workers how to reunite families separated by humanitarian emergencies

The American Red Cross’s Restoring Family Links program reunites families separated by conflict, disaster, or migration, but the organization faced two key challenges: raising awareness of the service and training a dispersed mix of paid staff and nearly 314,000 volunteers when in‑person instruction wasn’t always possible. Limited time and resources made it hard to deliver consistent, expert-led training across chapters.

The Red Cross adopted Adobe Captivate (with Creative Cloud tools) to build interactive eLearning modules—launching eight courses in 2016–17—and quickly scaled training access. In the first year 440 people completed courses, volunteer eLearning completions rose fourfold, staff were freed to focus on casework, learning consistency improved, one‑on‑one retraining was reduced, and the organization plans at least 15 more modules.
