Volkswagen wanted an innovative way to engage German and Dutch football fans ahead of their UEFA EURO 2012 matchup, so Amsterdam agency ACHTUNG! (with developers Superhero Cheesecake) was hired to build Das Interland, a multiplayer penalty-shootout game that ran on iOS, Android and Facebook and awarded a Volkswagen Up! to the winning country’s player. The challenge was to deliver a rich, country-branded social experience across platforms on a tight timeline.

Using Adobe Flash Professional and Adobe AIR (with native extensions, Robotlegs and TestFlight), the team built localized Dutch and German apps and quickly adapted them for Facebook, avoiding what would have been a 700% increase in development time from separate native builds. In 12 days the campaign drove nearly 700,000 games and over 1 million penalty shots, propelled Das Interland to #2 overall free app and #1 mobile game in both German and Dutch iOS stores, and met the launch deadline.
