Winston-Salem State University, a regional public university in Winston Salem, North Carolina, needed a better way to communicate with students and support admissions and enrollment efforts. Working with AdmitHub’s AI-powered admissions chatbot as part of the Gear Up program, the university aimed to supplement email and direct mail, reduce staff time spent answering repetitive questions, and improve access for students from rural and low-income backgrounds.

AdmitHub implemented a chatbot named “Winston” to answer questions by text message across hundreds of topics and help students through key enrollment steps. The results were strong: freshman yield increased 8%, total enrollment rose 2% with 92 additional students, incoming phone calls dropped 36%, on-time bill payment improved 74%, and immunization compliance improved 37%. Winston-Salem State also planned to expand the solution with a retention chatbot and a website chatbot for broader campus support.
