Using email to drive player engagement

Frontier Developments, the UK-based video game developer behind Elite Dangerous, needed a way to help new players understand the game’s complex systems and stay engaged in the first 30 days. Working with Adestra, Frontier used email and automation to improve onboarding, with the goal of increasing sessions, play time, and long-term player loyalty.

Adestra helped Frontier build an automated onboarding journey using player data to segment new users into three personas and deliver tailored content based on their experience level and gaming platform. The results were strong: open rates reached as high as 34%, click-through rates were 182% higher than the control journey, and average play time in the dynamic journey was more than double that of the control.
