Virginia scanning program slashes vulnerabilities in web apps

The Virginia Information Technologies Agency, or VITA, needed a better way to scan and validate vulnerabilities in its web applications. Agencies were reporting that the existing approach was not finding issues reliably, so VITA looked for a more dependable process to support its web application security program.

VITA implemented a vulnerability-scanning program using Acunetix to check more than 1,600 public-facing web applications and a couple thousand internal ones across more than 67 state agencies each quarter. The program, which also includes penetration testing and help interpreting results, cut high-risk vulnerabilities by 30 percent in one year and gave agencies clearer guidance on fixing issues.
