Electric cooperative automates insurance document production with ActiveDocs Opus Software

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), the insurer for 900 member electric cooperatives, needed to streamline the annual production of up to 10,000 summary plan descriptions (SPDs) for member health plans. Prior to 2003 NRECA relied on manual mail merges and assembly that could take weeks, so it deployed ActiveDocs document automation and template management software to address the scale and compliance challenge.

ActiveDocs was integrated with NRECA’s Microsoft .NET/SharePoint-based self-service benefits website and back-end administration systems to merge plan options with template content, create personalized SPDs immediately, and store final documents in SharePoint. The ActiveDocs solution lets NRECA run thousands of documents in a very short time versus the previous manual process, meet the 60‑day enrollment deadline, improve scalability, and make up-to-date, compliant documents available to member co‑ops on demand.
