The Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, an event with nearly 20,000 participants, is a signature event in a city known for its eco-consciousness. The race's main challenge was to stay ahead of high participant expectations and reduce its environmental footprint year-over-year. To automate manual tasks and support its green mission, AMHM turned to ACTIVE Network, adopting its online race registration and event management software beginning in 2004.
ACTIVE Network’s solution automated registration, payment processing, and volunteer management, freeing up organizers to focus on sustainability initiatives. The technology supported and promoted AMHM's green program, which included 100% paperless registration and partnerships like the ACTIVE Pledge of Sustainability. As a result, the marathon was voted the “Greenest Marathon” by Runner’s World, and its initiatives, such as using solar-powered generators, saved approximately 100 gallons of gas on race day, making the event more appealing to runners, the city, and sponsors.
