A Actian Case Study
Verite Group developed Netscope, a network-intelligence application to reconstruct IP sessions and monitor growing business network traffic, but ran into a bottleneck finding a database that could handle very large, complex packet data while scaling across diverse customer environments and keeping CPU/disk use and specialized developer effort low. Relational/XML and Hibernate-based prototypes proved too resource-intensive, threatening real‑time performance and enterprise scalability.
Verite adopted the Versant Object Database as Netscope’s engine, enabling native object storage without major code changes and supporting deployments from a single laptop to distributed enterprise clusters. In benchmarks VOD processed captures more than twice as fast with minimal CPU/disk load—e.g., a 30‑second capture took ~45 seconds with Hibernate versus ~20 seconds with VOD—improving retrieval speed and enabling near‑real‑time analysis; Netscope was released in late 2010.
