A Actian Case Study
Telecom Bretagne research engineers built a maritime surveillance demonstrator to validate a new UsiXML-based user interface description language (UIDL) for the European Maritime Surveillance Framework. They needed a database that could store rich, complex simulation objects and operational mission data without the performance bottlenecks and development friction a relational database would introduce, and that would support rapid, multi-language development cycles.
They chose Versant Object Database for its fast navigational access, high performance with complex objects, and multi-language APIs (Smalltalk, Python, Java, C++), allowing a shared object model across tools. This enabled the team to develop and validate an XML-compliant UIDL on top of UsiXML and IDEAL 2.0, simplifying development while ensuring interoperability, maintainability and successful validation of the μ7 concept in the maritime demonstrator.
