Siemens - Customer Case Study

Siemens Industry Automation needed a database solution for SIMATIC BATCH, its scalable batch-process control system used in chemical, pharmaceutical and food plants. The challenge was to store and manage ISA-88–based hierarchical, object-oriented models and recipes in real time, handle double-digit‑GB data sets, and guarantee 24/7 availability and traceability with minimal planned downtime across long hardware/software lifecycles.

Siemens implemented the Versant object database, which natively supports object models, real-time access, redundant replication, automatic schema versioning and event watch-and-notify mechanisms, while scaling from single‑user to distributed client/server configurations. In production since 2003, the solution enables continuous, customizable control of small to large batch processes, meets regulatory traceability requirements and has delivered more than a decade of reliable operation worldwide.
