A Actian Case Study
Reliance Mutual, a UK life and pensions company, radically changed its business model in 2003 to buy underperforming policies rather than write new ones. That strategy required consolidating large, disparate policy blocks into a single administration system while managing massive data volumes with a sharply reduced IT team (about 30 to 10 people), creating a major migration, integration, and performance challenge.
Reliance deployed the Actian Ingres database on a thin‑client UNIX architecture and built modular Solaris production, test, and development environments with in‑house C/SQL applications, nightly batch automation, and a Citrix front end. Ingres’ low‑maintenance, high‑performance handling of concurrent users let the small team manage ~1 TB and 200,000+ policies entirely in‑house, supporting rapid acquisitions and helping grow assets from £233 million to £1.6 billion.
