Fraunhofer FOKUS developed an Open IPTV Ecosystem to deliver interactive, personalized IPTV services and faced the challenge of supporting massive concurrent access, fast retrieval of complex EPG/content data, and easy integration with evolving application code while scaling to potentially millions of users.

To compare options they benchmarked Versant Object Database (VOD) against Oracle MySQL using the JDO API. VOD’s native object model outperformed MySQL—over 8× faster for broadband content guide updates and roughly 50% faster for session-control operations (about 25% faster over a network)—and was adopted in proof-of-concept deployments in Singapore and Taiwan, leading to a recommendation to use VOD where performance and complex data handling are critical.
