A Actian Case Study
Sony Creative Software’s Blu-print, a Blu-ray authoring tool used by major studios, was struggling with an ORM-based database that couldn’t scale to the hundreds of thousands of objects a disc can require. Frequent changes to the evolving Blu-ray spec made schema updates slow, error-prone and time-consuming—often requiring full data exports, schema migration and reimports—and led to crashes or blocked feature development.
The team replaced the ORM with Versant’s db4o embedded object database, which tolerates schema changes, skips unknown fields, and keeps data in a self-contained file on the client. The switch simplified installation and configuration, reduced footprint and increased robustness, and boosted performance across the product—cutting project creation from about 2 minutes to 15 seconds, according to the Blu-print architect.
