Actian Ingres Database Powers Global Circulation for Askews Library Services

Askews Library Services is a 130‑year‑old book wholesaler that prepares and supplies fully catalogued, shelf-ready books to thousands of libraries worldwide. Facing fierce, low‑margin competition and highly individual customer requirements (different covers, labels, barcodes, etc.), Askews needed to automate procurement and order fulfilment to handle millions of items while keeping costs under control.

Askews implemented a bespoke e‑procurement system powered by the Actian Ingres Database (migrated onto Sun x86/Solaris 10), which scales to support a repository of about 4 million titles and seamless upgrades. The solution drove 80–90% electronic ordering, improved flexible, low‑cost fulfilment, reduced licensing and maintenance costs through open‑source technology, and delivered high performance, stability and easier ongoing development and support.
