Acronis Protects World’s Largest Alumina Refinery from Data Loss

Hydro Alunorte, the world’s largest alumina refinery in Pará, Brazil, faced unacceptable downtime and slow recoveries after relying on Norton Ghost and manual DVD backups—sometimes taking up to two days to restore systems versus a target RTO of 2–4 hours, with plant downtime costing up to US $4.2 million per day. To reduce recovery times, increase resilience, and protect against data disasters, Hydro Alunorte selected Acronis and its Acronis Backup Advanced solution.

Acronis implemented Acronis Backup Advanced, which delivered 50% faster backups, advanced deduplication that saved 2.7 TB of storage and reduced network load, and the ability to recover to dissimilar hardware. As a result, Hydro Alunorte cut RTOs from two days to about two hours, improved RPOs, and established a clear, more resilient disaster recovery plan—demonstrating measurable operational and risk-reduction benefits from Acronis.
