How Homag Uses Acrolinx to Reduce Translation Costs

HOMAG Group AG, the global market leader in woodworking machinery, faced rising translation costs and inconsistent German source language across 15 production entities and 21 sales/service units. Although HOMAG used SDL translation services and translation memories for 26 target languages, developers and authors used varying wording that increased translation volume; the company needed a linguistic quality check and consistent terminology. HOMAG implemented Acrolinx content optimization software to address source‑language quality and terminology reuse.

Acrolinx analyzed 18,000 user guides and 145,000 UI strings, extracted terms, and helped HOMAG import an initial 5,000 terms (now 7,939) into a centralized terminology database; checks were added in Word and via the Acrolinx SDK for custom tools. Acrolinx’s linguistic checks and Reuse feature reduced average page length from 160 to 136 words, cut an example sentence from 54 to 14 words (a 31% translation cost reduction for that variant), and saved roughly 1,248,000 words across translations—delivering about $100,000 US/year in translation cost savings while improving overall content quality.
