How National Louis University is Using Adaptive Learning to Tackle the Completion Problem

National Louis University (NLU) launched the Harrison Professional Pathways Program (HP3) to expand college access for Chicago-area, first-time and first-generation students who face financial, academic and completion barriers. The core challenge was improving persistence and graduation rates for students often admitted with 2.0–3.0 GPAs while keeping the program affordable and flexible.

NLU implemented a competency-driven, flipped two-year pathway that pairs twice-weekly in-person sessions with Acrobatiq adaptive courseware, Success Coaches, and pre‑sequenced course plans to reduce excess credits and debt. After a 2015 pilot and a fall launch with 78 students, the adaptive platform’s predictive analytics and customizable content increased engagement, enabled targeted interventions, and left most students on track or improving; NLU reports lower costs, better instructor insight, and plans to expand personalization and measure retention and graduation gains.
