Steward Health Care - Customer Case Study

Steward Health Care, a community-based system with 10 hospital campuses, 17,000 employees and over 4 million patient encounters a year, faced a failing digital presence: steward.com and affiliated sites ran on aging, pre-smartphone infrastructure with roughly 19,000 pages, poor findability and an overwhelming amount of unused content (research showed 89% of pages were almost never visited). The organization needed a patient-centered, mobile-first experience that could be managed in-house and deliver personalized, consumer-grade interactions.

Working with Hatch 130 and Acquia, Steward rebuilt its platform on Acquia Cloud and Drupal using data from analytics and surveys of 2,000 patients and staff. The team streamlined content, added short video and mobile-first designs, introduced tools like a custom home-page “dial pad” and implemented Acquia Lift for personalization. The relaunch drove substantial engagement gains—site visitors increased 84–148% across hospitals, bounce rates fell 48–60%, and mobile traffic rose 90–136%—and Steward continues to use content governance and personalization to expand appointment booking, marketing automation and customer service features.
