Extending Open Source Principles Beyond Technology

Red Hat launched opensource.com to build a community that showcases how open source principles are applied beyond technology, but needed a scalable, secure platform and partner expertise to support heavy contributor activity, moderation and ongoing site management. The challenge was to create a flexible, multi-channel social publishing site that encouraged contributions, simplified moderation, and stayed up-to-date without diverting Red Hat’s team from content and community goals.

Red Hat built opensource.com on Drupal with Acquia providing hosted services and Palantir.net delivering implementation. Using Drupal core and modules (Organic Groups, Workflow, Flag, Views), plus Acquia Search and Acquia Hosting, the team implemented channel-based moderation, streamlined editorial workflows, featured content tools and faceted search. The result is a scalable, secure community site that launched on schedule, supports high contributor volume, and promotes engagement around open source ideas.
