Water Research Foundation (WRF) is a non-profit that funds and distributes drinking-water research to municipalities, utilities and universities worldwide, managing roughly 1,200 subscribers, a research library of 2,300+ projects valued at $700M and an innovation database of 1,100+ technologies. WRF’s legacy site and fragmented systems made it hard for users to discover research, so the organization needed both complex technical migrations (SharePoint → Acquia DAM, ASP.NET → Drupal 8, IIS → Acquia Cloud/Personalization) and a simplified, more engaging subscriber experience to boost engagement.
Partnering with Elevated Third, WRF reimagined the site as a browsable digital magazine, consolidated hundreds of tags via subscriber card sorts, and built topic pages that aggregate projects, articles and events. The platform move to Acquia Cloud, Acquia DAM and Acquia Personalization enabled clean, connected data, role- and location-based content portals, and targeted personalized blocks and subscriptions — resulting in a successful replatform, better data insights, and higher effectiveness getting research into users’ hands.
