Preview of the Sedgwick County Case Study

Sedgwick County Upgrades to a 21st Century Storm Warning System For Less Than $1 Million

Sedgwick County, Kansas needed to modernize its tornado/storm warning system to allow targeted, remotely controlled alerts while minimizing replacement costs. Acoustic Technology, Inc. supplied its ATI Siren Monitoring Controller RTU and MassAlert® central-control software to retrofit existing sirens and add new units so the county could move from county‑wide activations to individually controlled, geographically targeted warnings.

Acoustic Technology, Inc. installed 27 new sirens and fitted the remaining ~120 older sirens with RTUs tied into MassAlert®, enabling two‑way status monitoring, NWS polygon-triggered activations, redundant communications, and central control. The retrofit approach saved roughly 60 sirens from immediate replacement, kept the project under $1 million (below the $1.25M budget), reduced over‑alerting, and improved the likelihood that residents in threatened areas take protective action.
