Drax Power saves several million pounds with Acora

Drax Power, a UK-based renewable energy company, faced the challenge of predicting highly volatile Balancing Service Use of System (BSUoS) charges from the National Grid, which changed as frequently as every 30 minutes and severely impacted profitability. To combat these unpredictable costs, Drax Power worked with vendor Acora, which deployed a data analytics platform through its group company Elastacloud to develop a working predictive model.

Acora's solution involved creating a database and an API for Drax Power's energy trading team, which was later integrated into their own trading platform dashboards. This data science model provided accurate predictions of BSUoS charge fluctuations, enabling Drax Power to optimize its energy production. Over three years, the solution saved the customer several million pounds by allowing them to minimize generation during high-cost periods.
