University Children's Hospital Zurich digitizes 5,000 questionnaires with Acodis

The University Children's Hospital Zurich faced the challenge of digitizing a unique, decades-long longitudinal study data set, which was comprised of over 750,000 handwritten paper documents. A manual analysis of this archive would have taken years. They partnered with Acodis to pilot the use of Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) and data extraction to process 5,000 of these questionnaires.

Acodis created a specialized ICR system trained on the hospital's specific forms to recognize handwritten numbers and automatically structure the data. The solution enabled manual review and correction through a customized editor, saving significant time and resources. The pilot project was successfully completed, allowing the hospital to begin preserving and processing this invaluable data set for future research.
