State Chancellery Canton St.Gallen Processing the Past For the Future Using Intelligent Document Processing (IDP)

The State Chancellery of the Canton of St.Gallen needed a way to digitize and make searchable a large archive of historical official publications, which previously could only be accessed physically in state archives. Acodis was brought in to support this with intelligent document processing, including OCR, text and structural analysis, and an editor for metadata management.

Acodis implemented the Retrodigital platform, an expandable web application with full-text search and filtering that makes historical documents accessible anytime and anywhere. The project covered around 120,000 pages across 2,450 documents dating back to 1941, significantly improving research efficiency, enabling location-independent access, and supporting the canton’s digital government efforts.
