Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a member of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, sought to overcome the slow and inefficient trial-and-error process for its chromatographic method development. The team, led by Senior Scientist Rudy Sneyers, faced the dual challenge of significantly reducing development time while simultaneously improving the quality and scientific rigor of their methods.

By working with vendor ACD/Labs and implementing their ACD/AutoChrom software, Janssen established the COSMOS process. This solution combined a scientific strategy for design of experiments with automated peak tracking and data evaluation software from ACD/Labs. The results were substantial: Janssen achieved an 80% reduction in method development time and a dramatic 25-fold improvement in quality using the AutoChrom UPLC–Twins system. ACD/Labs' software was instrumental in automating manual data analysis, which recovered the investment costs quickly and delivered ongoing positive returns.
