How Data Management Helped Increase Efficiency Through Computer-Assisted Structure Identification

A leading international tobacco company faced a significant challenge with its analytical data being scattered across individual computers and shared drives, making it inaccessible and unusable for its 30-50 scientists. To address this, they partnered with ACD/Labs to centralize data access and improve their computer-assisted structure identification (CASI) process for characterizing components in tobacco products.

ACD/Labs deployed its MS Workbook Suite to create a centralized, searchable database for GC/MS spectral data and chemical information. This solution streamlined the identification of unknown compounds by matching spectra and retention indices. The results included a major increase in efficiency and accuracy. A decade later, the system was migrated to the cloud, where 20 users and 2 expert power users continue to leverage the centralized data for faster, more reliable component identification.
