A AccuWeather For Business Case Study

Preview of the CitiField Case Study

SkyGuard® Has Your Bases Covered

CitiField faced a sudden, dangerous storm on September 16, 2010 — including microbursts, 60 mph winds, lightning and a nearby tornado — putting fans and players at risk. To manage this threat, CitiField used AccuWeather For Business’ SkyGuard system for real‑time severe weather alerts and stadium‑specific warnings.

SkyGuard issued a cloud‑to‑ground lightning warning at 4:51 p.m. (valid 5:15–6:30 p.m.) and a 60 mph wind warning at 5:25 p.m., providing a total of 42 minutes of advance notice before the storm struck at 5:42 p.m.; the National Weather Service did not issue any warning until 5:32 p.m. Those AccuWeather For Business alerts allowed orderly movement of fans to covered concourses and players to the clubhouse, and contributed to zero injuries in the stadium despite a nearby lightning strike and a tornado touchdown four miles away.
