A AccuWeather For Business Case Study
Ferromex, Mexico’s largest railroad and operator of the scenic Copper River Canyon “Q” line, faced a sudden threat from torrential rains on July 23, 2009 that risked track washouts and a potentially catastrophic passenger-train accident. Sixteen days earlier AccuWeather For Business had begun providing weather alerts and forecasts to Ferromex, giving the railroad advance notice of dangerous conditions.
AccuWeather For Business meteorologists issued a targeted warning to Ferromex’s dispatch center in Guadalajara, prompting dispatchers to send a hyrail crew to scout the track between the alerted kilometer posts; the crew found water flowing over the rails and the train was stopped before entering the remote canyon. Passengers were safely bused to Chihuahua, the washouts were confirmed after the water receded, and AccuWeather For Business’ alert directly prevented the train from going over a washout—an outcome Ferromex says saved lives.
