A Accruent Case Study
The University of Ottawa, Canada’s largest English–French bilingual research university with over 35,000 undergraduates and 6,000 postgraduates, needed to clearly demonstrate how provincial funding improved its Capital Renewal Program. Historic facility audits were inconsistent and only assessed assets at a high level (age/type), preventing system-by-system analysis and making it difficult to justify funding allocations to the Province and the Council of Ontario Universities.
Using VFA Capital Planning (VFA Facility) and updated assessment methodologies, the University now breaks assets into system-level components, enforces data-entry rules for accuracy, and reports a campus-wide Facility Condition Index (FCI) tied to funding impact. This enabled better identification and forecasting of high-priority projects (health & safety, code compliance, equipment failure prevention), clearer reporting to executives and funders, and more effective allocation of capital to improve the student environment.
