Bringing Google Assistant Voice Commands to ‘All 4’

Channel 4, the UK public-service broadcaster behind All 4, wanted to make its OTT service easier to use as smart speakers and voice interfaces grew in popularity. The challenge was to let viewers search and start content by voice through Google Assistant, while handling issues like accents, limited utterance options, and the need to understand how users would interact with a new feature on All 4.

Accedo partnered with Channel 4 to build a Google Assistant-enabled Chromecast experience for All 4, using testing, data analysis, and UX refinements to make voice playback reliable and intuitive. Accedo also added features like autoplay, end-of-playback recommendations, and resume support, while working around Google Assistant limitations such as fixed commands and parental guidance flows. The result was an easy-to-use voice service that improved content discovery, delivered higher-than-average engagement, and expanded All 4 to more than 20 platforms.
