East Carolina University, a large public university in Greenville, NC, faced a complicated scholarship process: each department managed its own application and the university scholarship office relied on spreadsheets to track awards. Students had to search across departments for opportunities, and the complexity made it difficult for students, parents, and staff to understand and manage scholarship and financial aid costs.

AcademicWorks implemented a campus-wide scholarship system that integrated scholarship applications and nightly data imports from Banner by Ellucian, allowing students to find all opportunities in one place and enabling automatic matching to eligible awards. In the first year, ECU awarded 250 campus-based scholarships through AcademicWorks and more than 2,800 students completed the online scholarship process; the scholarship office also reduced awarding time dramatically, with one staff member able to award 90 scholarships and notify students in a single day instead of several days.
