A Absolute Software Case Study
Northern Gas Networks, which maintains and repairs 37,000 km of gas pipework across northern England, relied on around 570 ruggedized laptops (about £1.4M of hardware) for engineers to access and record pipeline data onsite. Many devices were not consistently returned from the field and IT had no reliable way to locate or identify who was using them, creating replacement costs and security concerns.
The company deployed laptops with Absolute Persistence® built into firmware and purchased licences for centralized, cloud-based management. This lets IT track and freeze devices, display return instructions, build geofences with alerts, and leverage Absolute’s investigations team and police cooperation for recoveries — all without additional infrastructure. As a result, missing devices have been greatly reduced, device health and location are readily visible, and the £1.4M laptop investment is better protected.
