Large Telecommunications Service Company was targeted by a nine-week business email compromise campaign in which attackers impersonated a real vendor and used domain lookalikes and staged communications to update ACH/W‑9 details and redirect a legitimate invoice payment of more than $700,000. Abnormal AI’s cloud email security platform (powered by Abnormal Behavior Technology/ABX) was used to monitor and evaluate the email lifecycle and detect the suspicious vendor impersonation and unusual vendor account changes.

Abnormal AI applied identity modeling, a relationship graph and NLP-based content analysis to flag the lookalike domain, unsafe engagements, and mismatched vendor documents, identifying the attack during passive-mode evaluation and preventing the fraudulent payment on April 8, 2020. As a result, Abnormal AI stopped the attempted invoice fraud and prevented a loss of over $700,000, demonstrating measurable protection against sophisticated vendor impersonation attacks.
