Why Retail is the Perfect Environment for Waste Reduction

Victoria Leeds, a retail and leisure destination in Leeds City Centre owned and managed by Hammerson, wanted to improve waste management across its commercial facilities. The site was looking to raise recycling rates while reducing waste management costs, with its recycling rate sitting at 44.72% and split evenly between general waste and dry mix recycling.

ABM Industries implemented a tailored waste management programme that included a dedicated waste champion, retailer engagement and training, coffee grounds collection for landscaping, RFID bin tracking, improved signage, and a Biohitech food digester for food waste. The result was a rise in recycling to 97%, a reduction of 1.5 tons of coffee waste from general waste streams in seven months, and a £23,000 reduction in the waste bill.
