Case Study: Bay Area Rapid Transit achieves safer, more energy-efficient stations with ABM Industries

A ABM Industries Case Study

Preview of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Case Study

Energy Management Saves 75% for Bay Area Rapid Transit

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) worked with ABM Industries to address aging lighting infrastructure at its 16th and 24th Street Stations. The original fixtures, installed when the stations opened in 1973, were still in place, and BART needed major electrical upgrades to improve safety, security, and energy efficiency.

ABM Industries completed a major lighting retrofit that included removing nearly 3,000 old fluorescent fixtures, installing new high-efficiency fixtures, relamping and reballasting existing lights, and adding emergency lighting circuitry and controls. The project delivered 786,687 kWh in annual energy savings, cut energy costs by 75%, improved light levels by 400%, and produced a safer environment with reduced criminal activity, all with a 3.3-year payback.
