City of Oakland’s Energy Management Creates 55% Greater Efficiency at Parking Facility

The City of Oakland partnered with ABM Industries to upgrade its aging parking garage lighting at 1250 Martin Luther King Way. The city wanted to improve energy efficiency, safety, and lighting quality, while also adding EV charging stations—all without increasing its operating budget.

ABM Industries implemented high-efficiency fluorescent and LED lighting with wireless Zigbee lighting controls, which cut energy use by 45% and enabled installation of ChargePoint EV chargers without upgrading the electrical system. The project delivered $54,965 in annual energy savings, 342,654 kWh saved per year, a 2.9-year payback, and improved maintenance, safety, and lighting quality.
