NASCAR partnered with Ably to solve the challenge of delivering live in-car dashboard data to fans at massive scale. Its Drive platform needed to stream high-frequency telemetry like speed, RPM, throttle, and fuel data without overloading infrastructure, especially during sudden spikes in traffic caused by major race moments.
Using Ably Channels and delta compression, NASCAR broadcasts a carefully subsampled version of telemetry data to fans in real time, enabling a fast and reliable second-screen experience. The result has been improved scalability, lower bandwidth usage, and stronger fan engagement, including more than 370 million messages delivered and 56,000+ users connected simultaneously during the 2024 Daytona 500.
