USC Cancer Surveillance Program Automates Medical Records Processing and Ensures Compliance with ABBYY

The University of Southern California’s Los Angeles County Cancer Surveillance Program (CSP) tracks every new cancer diagnosis in the county—about 40,000 cases a year—and must report complete case and treatment data to the California Cancer Registry. CSP faced slow, costly and insecure paper‑based workflows: field staff manually copied thousands of diverse forms, relied on expensive vendors for imaging, and struggled with unreliable OCR, creating delays and compliance risk.

Working with 1Mage and WiseTREND, CSP deployed ABBYY FlexiCapture to scan records in the field, extract key fields, verify data and automatically upload images and structured data to the CCR’s Eureka database and CSP’s document store. Implemented in weeks with hospital‑specific templates, the solution cut costs, removed outsourcing and security risks, sped data extraction and updates, and put CSP on track to move from hospital to registry in days.
