University of Patras monitors the research and academic process with ABBYY FlexiCapture

The University of Patras, a leading Greek institution focused on science, technology and social sciences, needed to automate its campus-wide academic and research evaluations, which rely on thousands of student and faculty questionnaires. The main challenge was to reduce time-consuming manual processing while choosing a non‑proprietary, reusable solution that IT staff could configure and extend in‑house to meet future needs.

After evaluating options, the university implemented ABBYY FlexiCapture through partner Infobank Interlease DSA. A one‑month pilot processed 2,000 questionnaires, and the system now handles the university’s annual questionnaire volume far faster and with higher accuracy (8,000 questionnaires compiled for the first semester of 2009–10, and roughly 15,000/year comparable to prior throughput). The IT department operates and customizes the solution, benefiting from a user‑friendly GUI, scripting support, reduced manual effort, and the flexibility to expand the platform to other processes such as invoice recognition.
